Freeman Lake is a small body of water in North Chelmsford, Massachusetts. This lake is just south of Groton Road, which makes up part of Route 40. Route 3A, Route 4, and the Northwest Expressway are also nearby, making it easy for commuters living in the area to travel to work. Varney Playground, a popular public park with a baseball field, basketball courts, tennis courts, and picnic areas, can be found near the northern coast of the lake.
Most of the homes near Freeman Lake are located south of Groton Road in a neighborhood formed by Willis Drive, Needham Street, and Kiberd Drive. These roads form an enclosed circle connecting both ends to Route 40. Houses in the area are mainly 2-4 bedroom single-family homes with multiple bathrooms and thousands of square feet in living space. Most of these residences also have a scenic view of the lake.
Freeman Lake is just a short drive east of Drum Hill Road, the site of a large shopping area. Here you’ll find many restaurants and banks, a supermarket, mail shipping centers, and much more. This lake also about five miles west of Chelmsford Mall and the town center, which features the town’s public library as well as a fitness center, pharmacy, and many more popular local businesses and restaurants. East Gate Plaza and Cornerstone Square, two outdoor shopping plazas, are also nearby.
Golfers can enjoy the many courses near Freeman Lake including Mount Pleasant Golf Club, Chelmsford Country Club and Chelmsford Country Club. There are also many hiking and biking trails nearby at Great Brook Farm State Park in the south and Lowell-Dracut-Tyngsborough State Forest in the north. In the winter months, local can hit the slopes at Nashoba Valley Ski Area and Great Brook Ski Touring Center, both of which are a short drive south of this lake. Although there’s no public beach along Freeman Lake, you can enjoy a day in the sun at either Micozzi Beach in Billerica or Heart Pond Beach in western Chelmsford.
