The Town of Holden is a small suburban community located in central Massachusetts. Originally a rural farming area, Holden has grown into a prosperous, community-spirited municipality with a population, as of 2009, of 17,700 residents. In addition to having an excellent school system and public library, the municipality provides a full range of services including public water, sewer, and electric power. The Town encompasses approximately thirty-six square miles, a good portion of which is protected open space, watershed and recreational areas.Holden is just north of Worcester, about 46 miles west of Boston, and 55 miles northeast of Springfield.
Holden has access to three major cross-state highways: the Worcester Turnpike (Route 9), Route 20, and the Massachusetts Turnpike. I-495 borders to the east, I-190 connects to the Fitchburg-Leominster area, I-84 and I-395 connect to Connecticut and points south.Today Holden is primarily a residential community with many small businesses and a small industrial park.The ability to maintain its small town charm while prospering fiscally through moderated industrial and small commercial businesses has allowed this community to accomplish an ideal balance. The townspeople are very aware of the need to keep the small town charm and at the same time broaden the tax base with appropriate light industrial and small commercial businesses.
