Littleton
First settled in 1714, Littleton is located in Middlesex County, 26 miles northwest of Boston. Littleton has a population of roughly 8,900. Originally a small town with many lakeside summer cottages, in the 1940s and ‘50s the suburban boom reached Littleton and many of the summer cottages were winterized, or turned into small capes and bungalows for year round residency. The 1960s and ‘70s saw the construction of more houses in Littleton, this time mostly split levels and colonials. The past few decades have seen the construction of more large colonials.
Littleton is located between Fort Devens and Hanscom Air Force Base, and is also home to IBM’s Massachusetts headquarters. It is located on the MBTA Fitchburg commuter rail line, and is at the intersections of Route 495 and Route 2. Littleton can also be reached by Routes 2A, 110, and 119. Littleton borders the towns of Groton, Westford, Acton, Boxborough, Harvard, and Ayer.
