Lake Whittemore is a large lake on the northern side of Luther Hill Park in Spencer, Massachusetts. Luther Hill Park is a fourteen acre recreation complex featuring a skate park, playground, picnic areas, and a public beach on the southern coast of the lake that is always lifeguard supervised during the summer. Visitors are also allowed to fish along the coast.
Most of the homes near Lake Whittemore are located in a cul-de-sac or on an enclosed circle within a mile of the lake’s shore. Houses can be found on nearby streets including Roy Drive, Longview Drive, Whittemore Cove, Castle Lane, Rustic Lane, and Bellevue Drive. Residences near the lake vary in size, but include cozy, 1-2 bedroom cottages as well as larger townhouses, ranches, and Colonials with 3 or more bedrooms. Most houses in the area have multiple bathrooms and a gorgeous view of the lake.
Lake Whittemore is in the northern end of the town center, the heart of Spencer. Here you’ll find many excellent local businesses and restaurants as well as a pharmacy, grocery store, a few banks, the Spencer Post Office, and the town’s public library. Many larger shopping malls and plazas, including the Greendale Mall and Lincoln Plaza in Worcester as well as the Auburn Mall and Auburn Plaza Shopping Center in Auburn, are just a short drive from Spencer.
Although Lake Whittemore is an excellent place to spend a day outside, there are many more public parks and large bodies of water in the area too. The neighborhoods surrounding the lake are centrally located between Spencer State Forest to the south and Oakham State Forest to the north. Both of these forests features miles of nature trails that can be used for biking, hiking, jogging, or simply observing the area’s wildlife.
Larger and most populated fishing areas than Lake Whittemore, such as Lake Lashaway, Burncoat Pond, and Cedar Meadow Pond, are just a short drive away. Three great golf courses — Strawberry Hills Golf Course, Hillcrest Country Club, and Leicester Country Club — can be found in Leicester, Massachusetts, which borders Spencer’s east side.
Traveling throughout Massachusetts is relatively easy for those living near Lake Whittemore. Route 9, Route 31, Route 49, Route 56, and the Massachusetts Turnpike are all within ten miles of the area.
