South Spencer

South Spencer is the area of the town located south of Route 9, which bisects the town roughly in half. Many of the houses in the area are located in a small neighborhood off of Route 31, the main road in southern Spencer. These neighborhoods can be found on Chestnut Street, Temple Street, and Briarcliff Lane.

Spencer State Forest, one of the area’s largest public forests, is right in the center of South Spencer. This forest covers 965 acres of the town and features many hiking, biking and walking trails that can also be used to observe the local wildlife. This forest is also the site of Howe Pond, which has a beach on its northern coast. Those who enjoy fishing, swimming, kayaking, or driving in a motorized boat can head to Stiles Reservoir, which is located on the eastern end of this area.

South Spencer is just a short drive away from the Auburn Plaza Shopping Center and Auburn Mall, two large shopping centers in Auburn, Massachusetts. There are over one hundred stores and restaurants between these two areas as well as many more local businesses along Route 12, the street they’re both located on. The exciting city atmosphere of Worcester is also just a 15 minute drive east of this region of Spencer.
