A medium- to large-sized town located in Middlesex County, Westford had a population of 21,951 residents at the last Census. With a large area of 31.3 square miles in the Merrimack River Valley, Westford was originally a producer of apples, granite, and yarn. As more mills were built in Lowell, Westford became a suburban bedroom community for mill workers. As transportation improved in the 1970s, more and more Westford residents also began to commute to Boston. Westford also offers convenient commutes to the technology belt along Rt. 110. Westford is an upper middle class suburb that also has popular retail areas.
Westford’s main neighborhoods are Forge Village, Nabnasset, Graniteville, Parker Village, and Center of Town. Westford borders the towns of Chelmsford, Tyngsborough, Groton, Littleton, Acton, and Carlisle. Westford is accessible by Rt. 495. The town is also served by the Lowell Regional Transit Authority bus service, which links to the MBTA commuter rail to Boston.
